Early Childhood Leadership and Policy Network

Diversity in Leadership Institute

Purpose: The purpose of the Diversity in Leadership Institute (DLI) is to:

  1. Promote greater diversity in leadership, including strengthening diverse leaders who can embrace their potential as leaders and step into more public, decision-making roles.
  2. Inform current leaders about issues of diversity, including providing information and resources to understand and incorporate diversity in our work (e.g. learning culturally responsive teaching strategies with children or learning more about strengthening and promoting diverse leaders).
  3. Equip participants to understand how diversity is impacting early childhood programs and to advocate for changes needed to better reflect and support diversity in programs.
  4. Create local and state teams to implement diversity in leadership action plans within their communities across North Carolina.

Format:  The DLI will be a year long format consisting of four gatherings: an initial two-day event for training and planning; two quarterly one-day events for training and implementation of team plans; and, a final two-day event for training, reflection and analysis of the experience of implementing the team action plans. The Diversity in Leadership Institute kick-off will be held Sept. 24 – 26, 2009 at the Hawthorne Conference Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Individuals must be willing to commit to the full year process and will be grouped into teams. Coaches will be provided for each team to offer resources and guidance during the process. Individuals will submit an application and will be accepted based on a pre-defined criteria in line with the goals of the Institute. Diversity in team make-up is a priority in terms of background (e.g. race/ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, ability/disability, etc.) and/or role in the field (e.g. family child care home provider, center teacher, director, consultant, etc.).

Program Content:  The Institute events will consist of a variety of formats such as keynote presentations, workshops, discussions and cultural events. Opportunities for teams to meet and plan will be imbedded in the program. National and local speakers will be leading workshops.
